  • SECOND SKIN BANDAGES

If you choose to use a second skin bandage on your tattoo like Sandier or Derm Shield (not recommended for people that are sensitive to adhesives), try to keep it on or 3-5 days. This kickstarts the healing process by keeping the tattoo moist and protected from germs. Fluid will collect under the film, but if it starts to leak out of the bandage, remove it.

It is important to keep your tattoo covered for the first day or two to prevent scabbing.

When it’s time to remove the bandage, do so in the shower and wash the tattoo immediately with unscented soap. Moisturize after getting out of the shower.

  • PRODUCTS TO USE

You should be washing your new tattoo twice a day or as needed if you get sweaty or dirty. Make sure you’re using an unscented soap. Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented Castille Soap is my go-to.

If you don’t use a second skin bandage, you can apply a thin layer of ointment moisturizer like Aquaphor for the first day or two. After that, or after removing the bandage, switch to an unscented lotion and use a few time a day or as needed if the tattoo looks dry or flaky. Aveeno and Cerave are great brands for moisturizers.

  • EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS

Sun exposure can quickly age and dull your beautiful tattoos. When your tattoo is fresh, try to keep it covered during long periods of sun exposure. Always use sunscreen on exposed tattoos no matter how long you’ve had them.

Avoid submerging your tattoo in water while it is healing. Tattoo are open wounds and bodies of water like pools, the ocean, and even baths can carry harmful bacteria and cause an infection.
